Blue Eyes – Part 2

This is a continuation of the fictional, short story “Blue Eyes.” To read part 1, click here.

Tiffany turned to Martha and after a deep breath, began to ask what had been on her heart to say.

“Martha, I know we’ve just met and I’d completely understand if you were uncomfortable with this…but, would you like to spend Christmas with my family? We have room and I’d hate to see you spend it alone. And honestly, talking with you has made me feel like my grandmother is here again. Would you consider it?”

Martha’s eyes welled up with tears as she felt a tug on her heart. It was the reminder that God had heard her prayer and He was answering. She widened her eyes and looked away, in an attempt to keep the tears from falling.

“I don’t know what to say, that’s such a grand gesture for someone you just met. Are you sure it wouldn’t be an imposition? I don’t want to be a bother or a burden and….”

Tiffany gently touched Martha’s shoulder to politely interrupt her.

“Martha, my family would be honored if you would come – it’s a tradition and I’m sure they’d love to have you there.”

“Thank….” Martha choked back tears at the realization she wouldn’t be alone. She’d be surrounded by family – though not hers, it was still family. “Thank you.” was all she could muster to say.

The bus arrived just as Martha wiped a tear from her eye. Tiffany stood up and extended a hand to help Martha up. Then, the two got on the bus together. They exchanged phone numbers during the bus ride and Tiffany said she’d pick Martha up tomorrow at noon. They said their temporary goodbyes when they arrived at Tiffany’s stop and Martha waved to her new friend as Tiffany got off the bus, and Tiffany smiled and waved back.

Martha took a moment and silently prayed.

Thank you God. I wasn’t sure if my heart would be able to be grateful this Christmas, but now I don’t even know how to contain my thankful heart. I’m overwhelmed by your goodness and that you loved me enough to give me my heart’s deepest desire.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Friend, everyone has a story. Everyone has something they are going through or hoping for. Let’s be sensitive to the world around us and reach out to those in need. And if you are in need yourself, know that not only does God love you, but He demonstrated it with action. Christmas is a time we celebrate God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. He didn’t just love you with His words – He loved you with action.

Luke 2:8-15

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth, peace to those on whom His favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

The rest of the Christmas story can be found in Luke, chapter 2. The most exciting thing is that the story doesn’t just end with the birth of Jesus and in fact, it still hasn’t ended. The story continues to this day, and you and I are part of it. You are made with a God-given purpose that only you can fulfill.

This Christmas, let us remember just how much we have to be thankful for. May we remember that in the time of our greatest need, God provided.

A baby changed everything – eternity, the world, and our lives, forever. And I am so eternally grateful for that.

Merry Christmas friends.
