Books Every 20-Something Should Read

If you’re anything like me, you probably walk into a Barnes and Noble and just stare at the vast number of books. It can feel overwhelming, even when you know the topic you want to read about. Personally, I can spend hours in a bookstore. I love the atmosphere, the feel of a new book in my hands, and the amount of information at my fingertips. I also put a lot of pressure on myself to buy just the right book because, let’s face it, no one wants to invest time into a book only to get halfway through and realize it was a waste.

I take my reading time very seriously and if you do too, then I have the perfect list for you. Whether you’re looking for an inspiring romance story, a self-help book, or a book that pokes its way into the psychology of 20-something, I’ve got you covered.

The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter–And How to Make the Most of Them Now

Meg Jay is a clinical psychologist who specializes in adult development, and twentysomethings in particular. Her witty insight and client stories help shape the book into becoming a guide for nearly every major area of life. From work, to relationships, to finances – Meg Jay is a master at keeping the reader engaged and causing them to ask deeper questions about their own life. I read this book when I turned 20 and I’m so glad I did. I’ve carried a lot of her insight with me throughout the years and continually recommend this book to anyone in their twenties. It’s a quick read and also thoroughly entertaining and insightful.

The Happiness Project

Gretchen Rubin is the author of several bestselling books. As found in her bio, she was clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor when she realized what she really wanted out of life was to be a writer. The Happiness Project follows Gretchen through a year of purposeful living. Each month she tackles a different task – lightening up, being content, and boosting energy just to name a few. She shares her golden rules for purposeful living and finding happiness in everyday life. There were definitely “laugh out loud” moments for me as I read through this book. Like The Defining Decade, this is also an easy read that will keep you engaged. Gretchen is a down-to-earth writer whose life stories show not only her imperfections, but also her strength.

The O’Malley Series

For those of you who love a good romance mystery, Dee Henderson is the author for you. Henderson is the author of 14 best-selling novels, including the acclaimed O’Malley series. As a leader in the inspirational romantic suspense category, her books are guaranteed to keep you guessing and on your toes. Having read through most of this series, I’ve found myself both laughing and crying while reading her books. By the end of each story, you will feel connected to the characters and wish they were people you could befriend in reality. (Just a fair warning!) Her heartwarming stories of love and friendship are inspiring and her mysterious twists will keep you on the edge of your seat.
